Soil Management Lab - Research Projects

1. Sugarbeet soil management
Red River Valley area of North Dakota and Minnesota contributes almost half of nation's sugar beet production. Soil water and nutrient management are critical for beet production system. Lab is working on
(i) introducing conservation tillage practices,
(ii) nitrogen management,
(iii) starter fertilizer application, and
(iv) subsurface water management
under sugar beet production system.

2. Tile drainage and fertilizer nitrogen interactions
Red River Valley farmers rapidly adopt tile system to ensure the crop protection from water damage without knowing its effect on soil nitrogen dynamics. How nitrogen fertilizer management practices like, addition of N-inhibitor on nitrogen availability and nitrous oxide emissions from tiled field.

3. Tile drainage and conservation tillage practices interaction
This study will determine the interaction among subsurface drainage, crop rotation, and conservation tillage practice on productivity, soil health, and salt in drainage water.

4. Iron deficiency chlorosis of soybean
Soybean yield in the Red River Valley suffers a lot due to iron deficiency chorosis. There are several iron products available in market differing in iron forms. Our goal is to compare different iron chelate forms to supply plant with adequate iron.

5. Glyphosate applications on soil ecology
This project is in collaboration with Dr. Deirdre Prischmann, entomology. We are looking how soil invertebrates and soil properties responds to glyphosate application as compared to alternative weed management practices.
