Who is eligible to be on the Welcome Week Team?

Any current student who will also be enrolled as a student for the Fall 2024 semester and will be in good academic standing (minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA) as well as good disciplinary standing (not on behavioral probation) at the time of executing position responsibilities is eligible to apply.

If I will have another leadership position in the fall, can I still apply?

In most cases, yes. If you have accepted a position to be a Resident Assistant (RA), Residence Hall Association (RHA) Executive Board member, or Campus Attractions (CA) board member in 2024-2025, you are unable to serve on the Welcome Week Team due to time conflicts. If you have questions, please contact ndsu.welcomeweek@ndsu.edu

I haven't had a lot of leadership experience. Can I still apply?

Yes! It is not necessary to have held formal leadership roles or experience. The more important characteristics are the willingness to share your NDSU experience and a desire to make new students feel welcome at NDSU.  Welcome Week Team training will help you develop the other skills necessary for the role you will have.

What are the expectations of these positions?

Each position has different responsibilities and time commitments.  A position description is available here.

What are the benefits of joining the Welcome Week Team?

The skills you develop will help you in future jobs and leadership opportunities. Employers look for candidates with the types of skills gained through such a leadership experience. Additionally, you will expand your network by building relationships with other students, faculty, and staff. You'll also contribute to a positive NDSU community. Lastly, T-shirt(s), and meal(s) will be provided to team members.

Which position should I apply for?

Each position is unique and utilizes different strengths.

  • Group Leads help students make connections with one another, share their NDSU experience, and lead group meetings following a facilitation guide.
  • Guides focus on hospitality and assisting at events.
  • Move-In Crew provides a friendly face and help students and families move into the residence halls.
What does the application include?

Simply complete the application form which asks for basic information about you, your experiences at NDSU, and why you're interested in being on the Welcome Week Team.

Are there interviews? What are they like?

Yes, there are interviews for students applying to the Group Lead or Guide positions. The interviews are no longer than 20 minutes with someone from the Welcome Week Leadership Team and are meant to be a time to learn about your NDSU experiences, what interests you, and answer your questions.

Are all applicants required to interview?

No, there are some exceptions. Applicants who successfully hold leadership positions that include robust interview processes and supervision may bypass the interview process but must still complete the application form. These positions include; returning Welcome Week Group Leads, former RAs, Connection Crew, former RHA/NRHH Executive Board Members, former IFC/PHC Executive Board Members, ACE or TRIO tutors, Rising Scholars Mentors, College Ambassadors, STARS, Bison Guides, former CA board members, of former Fraternity/Sorority Executive Board members. When you complete the application, you will be able to mark your experience in any of these positions.

Would I be able to work with the Residence Hall or Community of my choice?

You may indicate your preferences in the application as well as the interview. While it is not a guarantee that you will work with the group of your choice, we do take your preferences into consideration when making group assignments.

Can I be a Welcome Week team member if I do not live on campus?

Absolutely! In fact, there are Welcome Week groups for new commuter students and you could indicate whether you prefer to lead one of these groups or groups of students who live on campus.

What is the time commitment?

One of the great things about being on the Welcome Week Team is that it is a short-term time commitment before classes begin fall semester. Within a few short days, you will gain leadership skills while making a positive impact on new students. The time commitment depends on the leadership position you will have. Detailed information for each position is available here

What if I can't attend training in its entirety?

Training is important to ensure all team members are prepared for their roles. Few exceptions are made especially for those in the Group Lead position. If you believe you have a valid reason for missing a portion of training, contact ndsu.welcomeweek@ndsu.edu to request permission.

Will I be able to move-in early if I will live on campus?

Yes, members of the Welcome Week Team will be able to move in early at no charge.
