Center for Accessibility and Disability Resources

The Center for Accessibility and Disability Resources plays a crucial role in supporting students with hidden disabilities, also known as invisible or non-apparent disabilities. These disabilities may include conditions such as learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mental health disorders, chronic illnesses, and others that may not be immediately apparent to others. Here are several ways in which CADR assist students with hidden disabilities:

Accommodations and Individualized Support:

  • CADR works with students to identify and implement appropriate accommodations tailored to their specific needs. This may include extended testing time, note-taking assistance, access to assistive technology, and alternative text.
  • Accommodations are developed on an individualized basis to address the unique challenges associated with hidden disabilities, ensuring that students have the necessary resources to succeed academically.

Advocacy and Communication:

  • CADR helps serve as advocates for students, communicating with faculty and other relevant parties to ensure that the student's needs are understood and accommodated.
  • They facilitate open communication between students and instructors to create an inclusive learning environment. This may involve educating faculty about the nature of hidden disabilities and the accommodations required.

Assistive Technology and Resources:

  •  CADR provides access to assistive technologies and resources that can aid students with hidden disabilities in their academic endeavors. This may include specialized software, audio materials, or other tools designed to enhance learning.

Referral and Coordination with other Campus Supports

  • CADR collaborates closely with various campus support units to ensure comprehensive assistance for students with hidden disabilities. Through seamless referrals and coordination, they work with the Counseling Center for mental health support, engages Student Health for holistic well-being, aligns with ACE tutoring for academic support, partners with the Dean of Students Office for non-academic concerns, collaborates with TRIO and Rising Scholars for diverse student needs, works with Residence Life for inclusive housing, and connects students with the Center for Writers to enhance written communication skills. This collaborative approach fosters an inclusive and supportive campus environment for students with hidden disabilities.
