Enroll for Internship Credits Through COMM 496

  1. Arrange an internship with a company, nonprofit organization, or practitioner of a profession. This can be any experience using communication skills at a professional level. Getting coffee and running errands doesn't count, but an array of experiences that will help you in your professional life certainly will.  The internship can be paid or unpaid.

  2. Complete the internship contract and have it signed by whoever will supervise the internship. This is an opportunity to have a "meeting of the minds" about exactly what your hours and duties will be.

  3. Meet with internship coordinator Funmilayo Odufuwa. These generally take 10 to 15 minutes and provide an opportunity to clarify the requirements for earning credits. This is also where you'll receive a paper permit to allow you to enroll in the COMM 496 Field Experience course.  Schedule an appointment via Bison Advise (formally Navigate).
  4. Take the permit to NDSU OneStop in the Memorial Union within seven days. The staff there will officially enroll you in the course.

Credits are earned at a ratio of 40 hours on the job per credit, with 120 hours (3 credits) of field experience required for each major. Three additional credits can be counted toward your major electives.

Please contact Funmilayo Odufuwa if you have any questions.
