The Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for effective preparation for doctoral study. One of the principle purposes of the program is to increase the numbers of professors from traditionally underrepresented populations. 

North Dakota State University in Fargo is one of fourteen original universities chosen in 1989 to host a Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program. The program was established by the United State Department of Education and named for the astronaut and physicist Ronald E. McNair.

What McNair Provides
McNair Scholars receive academic advising, tutoring, and mentoring. They participate in seminars to enhance study, research writing, and communication skills. The scholars receive stipends to conduct graduate level research under the direction of a university professor. They are given assistance in preparing for the Graduate Record Examination and the graduate school application process.

Program In a Nutshell

• We serve sophomores (who have completed 28 credits) through seniors who have a strong desire to pursue a doctorate degree.
• Eligibility:  Income Eligible and First Generation (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree) or Underrepresented at doctoral level.
• After completing 60 credits, scholars receive stipends (up to $2800 per calendar year) to conduct graduate level research under a graduate professor.
• Travel funds are available to attend professional conferences, and grad school visits
