Military Science - Army ROTC

Students who complete the Army ROTC program may pursue careers as officers in the Army National Guard, Army Reserve, or the Active Army. Students selected for active duty will receive a generous salary in excess of $53,000 per year, plus housing and medical benefits, and will have opportunities to travel to assignments throughout the world. Students selected for reserve components receive more than $7,700 per year for drills and annual training while pursuing their civilian careers. More importantly, the professional experience in management and leadership will enhance the student's marketability in any profession, civilian or military. 

Army ROTC offers the NDSU student outstanding scholarship opportunities. Four-, three- and two-year scholarship opportunities are awarded to qualified students. Four-year scholarships are awarded to college freshmen, as well as high school seniors prior to enrolling in college. Two, three, and four-year scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in, or plan to enroll in, the Army ROTC program. Scholarships pay for all tuition and fees, provide a $1,200 allowance for books and pay $420 to freshmen, $420 to sophomores, $420 to juniors and $420 to seniors monthly. Army ROTC awards more scholarships than any other service. 

The Army ROTC program consists of a two-year Basic Course and a two-year Advanced Course. The Basic Course is normally taken during the freshman and sophomore years. During these two years there is no military obligation for non-contracted cadets, and a student may withdraw at any time. Students who have taken Junior ROTC, have active duty military experience, or are currently a member of a Reserve/National Guard unit may receive placement credit for the Basic Course. 

ROTC classroom instruction covers opportunities in the various branches of the Army, orienteering, basic first aid, rifle marksmanship and leadership. In the leadership laboratory, students participate in rope bridging, drill and ceremonies, rappelling, weapons training and squad tactics techniques. During the sophomore year, course work in military leadership and land navigation is offered. Students also can attend the ROTC’s 29-day Basic Camp at Fort Knox, KY, with pay and get credit for all the Basic Course classes. 

Only eligible students are authorized to enter the junior year of ROTC. Juniors receive a $420 monthly stipend while seniors receive $420. At this phase, students agree to complete the Army ROTC program and obtain a commission. Students attend a 29-day Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, KY, between the third and fourth years. This course permits students to put into practice the principles and theories they have acquired from on-campus instruction. Students receive pay for this course plus travel expenses, room and board, and medical and dental care. 

The Advanced Course is open to any full-time student who 

1. Has two academic years of course work remaining;
2. Satisfies one of the following:    
    a. Veteran with honorable discharge,    
    b. Completed ROTC Basic Course,
    c. Has high school JROTC,
    d. Attended Basic Camp at Fort Knox, KY, or
    e. Is a member of National Guard or Reserve and has completed Basic Training;
3. Passes an Army physical;
4. Has a grade point average of at least 2.0; and
5. Has a desire to become an officer in the U.S. Army.

3. Options for simultaneous membership in Reserve/National Guard which include additional incentives such as Montgomery GI Bill, GI Bill Kicker, 100% tuition reimbursement, federal and state tuition assistance, drill and annual training pay 
4. Other scholarships available through affiliated military organizations 

Please note this is a sample plan of study; actual student schedules will vary depending on start year, individual goals, applicable transfer credit, and course availability. Students are encouraged to work with their academic advisor on a regular basis to review degree progress and customize their own plan of study.
