Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of our B.S. in Civil Engineering and B.S. in Environmental Engineering degree programs are expected within a few years of graduation to:

  • Engage successfully in the practice of engineering to solve current and emerging problems.
  • Conduct design in a manner that is ethical, includes diverse perspectives, and realizes the broader societal and sustainability implications of the design and decision-making process.
  • Ascend to leadership roles within the workplace via initiative and responsible stewardship
  • Advance their profession and communities through collaborative work, professional licensure, advanced degrees, lifelong learning, and engaged service.

Student Outcomes

To foster attainment of the educational objectives, the program curriculum has been developed and organized to ensure students will achieve the following outcomes by the time of graduation:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

ABET Accreditation

The program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) degree at NDSU is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. ABET accreditation is important, as it ensures that our program:

  • Has received international recognition of its quality.
  • Promotes “best practices” in education.
  • Directly involves faculty and staff in self-assessment and continuous quality improvement processes.
  • Is based on “learning outcomes” rather than “teaching inputs.”
  • Can more easily determine the acceptability of transfer credits.

Through application of ABET’s quality standards, we seek to achieve a better-educated, geographically mobile, and diverse technical workforce well prepared to advance innovation and excel professionally in fields of critical importance to society. Earning a degree from an ABET accredited program:

  • Verifies that your educational experience meets the global standard for technical education in our profession.
  • Enhances your employment opportunities, as many companies require graduation from an accredited program.
  • Supports your entry into a technical profession through licensure, registration, and certification.
  • Establishes your eligibility for many federal student loans, grants, and scholarships.
  • Provides greater opportunities to work globally.
