American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA)

The AREMA student chapter has been working towards promoting the advancement of railway-related engineering by fostering the close association between students and railway engineering professionals. Our chapter sent 3-members group to attend AREMA Annual meeting 2018 in Chicago, organized three guest speaker lectures by the industry professionals. We invited railway professional to share her experiences in 2019. (Faculty advisor: Dr. Ying Huang)

American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

The ASCE student chapter is a student run organization that enhances the learning experiences of civil engineering students through industry interaction, engineering competitions, and social events. The ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition tasks teams at universities around the nation to design, build, and race a canoe made out of reinforced concrete. New to NDSU ASCE in 2018-19 is the Geowall competition to design and build a model wrapped faced mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall (approx. (18”x18”x26”) using Kraft paper reinforcement. (Faculty advisors: Dr. Ravi Kiran Yellavajjala, Dr. Beena Ajmera)

American Water Works Association/Water Environment Federation (AWWA/WEF)

AWWA student members develop the expertise and competencies necessary for successful careers in water resources industries and agencies. In addition to regular monthly meetings and participate in WEFTEC design competitions, our members engage in various extra curricula activities, such as, International Prairie Student Conference, Red River Water Festival, MN Environmental Challenge Design Competition, Surface Water Workshop poster presentation, ND Water and Pollution Control Conference poster competitions, and field trips. NDSU students have won 2 national design competitions and a number of regional and state competitions. (Faculty advisor: Dr. Wei Lin)

Engineers Without Borders (EWB)

The EWB student chapter works with developing countries to design and implement sustainable infrastructure for local communities.  The NDSU chapter welcomes students from all engineering disciplines, and have been working with a small mountainside community in Guatemala since 2011. (Faculty advisor: Dr. Achintya Bezbaruah)

Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)

The ITE student chapter has been working towards promoting professional development of its members, supports and encourages education, stimulates research, develops public awareness programs and serves as a conduit for the exchange of professional information.  Our chapter had a busy and productive year with monthly meetings, volunteering efforts, participation in transportation technology tournament (TTT), traffic bowl competition, and participation in student leadership summit (SLS), and the ITE Annual meeting and 2019 Regional Competition. (Faculty advisor: Dr. Amiy Varma)

Materials Research Society (MRS)

The MRS student chapter has been working towards enhancing synergy between various departments on campus and provide a forum for dialogue between students and faculty researchers on campus pursuing materials research. Our chapter organized a Guest Lecture on Colloidal Nanocrystal Research at NDSU in 2018. We also participated in an outreach event for middle schools’ students organized by the Graduate School in 2019. (Faculty advisors: Dr. Kalpana Katti, Dr. Dinesh Katti)

Steel Bridge Team

The Steel Bridge Team is a group that allows students to collaborate on the design, fundraising, fabrication, and construction of an approximately 20' steel bridge. The team competes each year in regional/national competitions against bridges from around the US. Students are encouraged to develop their leadership, collaborative, engineering, and problem-solving abilities. Winning teams at each regional competition are invited to an annual national competition. NDSU holds 6 steel bridge national championships, the most of any school in the nation. (Faculty advisor: Dr. Ravi Kiran Yellavajjala)
