October 23, 2018 – Fargo, North Dakota – Patients with chronic diseases such as asthma or diabetes, as well as those who receive a cancer diagnosis, benefit from treatment based on research.
Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in pharmaceutical sciences and other areas at NDSU are working to advance research to help tackle diseases. They will share their research with the public at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists-NDSU Research Symposium on Thursday, October 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the NDSU Memorial Union Great Room at 1401 Administration Avenue, Fargo.
The students’ and postdocs’ research covers brain tumors, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma, diabetes, targeted therapeutic drug delivery and many different types of cancer.
In addition, invited event guest speakers and topics include:
- “Treating brain tumors. Why have we failed? Hope for the future!”
- William Elmquist, PharmD, PhD, Department of Pharmaceutics, College of Pharmacy, and Director of Brain Barriers Research Center, University of Minnesota. His current research focuses on examining the determinants of anticancer drug permeability through the blood brain barrier to improve treatment of brain tumors.
- The therapeutic enigma of Alzheimer’s diseases”
- Jonathan Woodcock, MD, associate professor, clinical director of Memory Disorders Clinic and Rocky Mountain Alzheimer’s Disease Center, University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Woodcock is actively involved in clinical research of Alzheimer’s disease.
- “Effective translation of novel therapeutic strategies for brain tumors”
- Jann Sarkaria, MD, Professor and Consultant, Department of Radiation Oncology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. His research focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategy for people with glioblastoma multiforme and brain metastasis.
Keynote presentations are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. NDSU pharmaceutical sciences graduate students and others will provide poster presentations about their research from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
