An advanced degree in pharmaceutical sciences from NDSU can quickly lead to career success.
A prime example is Venkata Indurthi, who earned his doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences in 2016 and is now the vice president for research and development at Aldevron, a biological science company in Fargo.
Aldevron is a leader in the manufacture of plasmid DNA, mRNA and proteins. The company’s custom manufacturing services provide scientists around the world with the components they need for groundbreaking research.
“My education at NDSU not only prepared me for the scientific challenges, but also for professional challenges,” Indurthi said, noting he selected NDSU because of its reputation for research advancements and funding opportunities. “My doctoral adviser, Dr. Stefan Vetter, trained me with the most important skill set that is required for a scientist, and that is to troubleshoot. The art of troubleshooting has enabled me to achieve career growth at a rapid rate.”
Indurthi’s career path is on a dramatic upward trajectory. Indurthi joined Aldevron in 2015 as a quality control scientist, and soon advanced to senior scientist, director of research and development, director of RNA Operations and, now, vice president.
In his position, Indurthi leads Aldevron’s scientists as they create new products and services for clients. He also is the operational lead for all of the company’s RNA-focused developments.
“NDSU also shaped my personality by providing me with leadership opportunities,” said Indurthi, who was active in the NDSU College of Health Professions Ambassadors while he was on campus. “And it gave me a platform to sharpen my soft skills that are critical for the leadership roles I currently have.”
His advice to people considering an advanced degree is straightforward.
“I would like to emphasize the importance of training. Graduate education is where you can make mistakes and, more importantly, learn from them,” Indurthi said. “My advice is: Train hard and that will prepare for all the challenges ahead.
“I would also say that you need to enjoy what you do.”
