Fargo, ND — The Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth at North Dakota State University is pleased to announce the return of five distinguished faculty members as Faculty Fellows for the 2024-2025 academic year. These faculty members have previously held fellowships with the Institute, and their continued involvement will further enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to the Institute's mission of advancing innovation, trade, and institutional research.
The 2024-2025 Faculty Fellows are:
Jeremy Straub, Ph.D. - Senior Faculty Fellow
Associate Professor of Computer Science
Dr. Jeremy Straub brings a wealth of expertise in the intersection of technology and policy, particularly in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. As an associate professor at NDSU, Dr. Straub has made significant contributions to the field, being the lead inventor on two U.S. patents and authoring over 50 journal articles and numerous conference papers. He is also the associate director of the Institute for Cyber Security Education and Research and a member of several professional societies, including the American Society for Engineering Education and SPIE.
Carol Archbold, Ph.D.
Walter F. and Verna Gehrts Endowed Professor of Criminal Justice
Dr. Carol Archbold is a recognized leader in the field of criminal justice, with a focus on police accountability, liability, and misconduct. Her research has been published widely, and she has authored or co-authored five books on policing issues. Dr. Archbold serves on the editorial boards of Police Quarterly and Policing: An International Journal and is the current Chair of the Executive Board for the American Society of Criminology – Division of Policing.
Ranjit Godavarthy, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Transportation and Logistics
Dr. Ranjit Godavarthy’s research is centered on enhancing mobility in rural and small urban areas in the United States. As an associate professor at NDSU, he has published extensively in prominent journals and teaches courses at the undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels in transportation and supply chain management. His work on rural transportation issues has earned him recognition in the field of transportation and logistics.
Yongtao (David) Hong, Ph.D.
Professor of Accounting
Dr. Yongtao (David) Hong specializes in financial accounting, with a research focus on how financial accounting information impacts business development. His work explores various factors influencing the quality of financial information, including international accounting standards, earnings management, and corporate governance. Dr. Hong’s research has been featured in prestigious journals, including the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Financial Management, and the Journal of Business Ethics.
Andrea Smith, J.D.
Senior Lecturer of Business Law
Andrea Smith brings extensive legal expertise to the Challey Institute as a former Assistant State’s Attorney, Special Assistant Attorney General, and private practitioner. She currently teaches business law at NDSU, covering areas such as business law, insurance law, and real estate law. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as a faculty adviser for College of Business student interns and is an experienced mediator and guardian ad litem.

The Faculty Fellows will engage in a variety of activities throughout the year, including educating and training students, conducting policy-relevant research, and participating in outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing public understanding of key issues.
