Combining his mechanical engineering expertise with medical innovation, Pooyan Vahidi Pashaki, a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering at NDSU is exploring new solutions to old healthcare challenges. From designing next-generation biomaterials for ACL reconstruction to advancing global manufacturing standards, his work reflects a thoughtful integration of mechanical and biomedical engineering. 

His journey showcases the transformative power of interdisciplinary research, offering new perspectives on how technology and science can work together to solve complex problems to better the lives of all.

Research Focus and Contributions

Pooyan’s current research spans biomaterials and tissue engineering, with his previous line of research in Mechanical Engineering spanning finite element analysis (FEM) and advanced manufacturing. With a strong foundation in mechanical engineering, he applies his expertise in FEM to biomedical engineering, advancing innovations in ACL reconstruction and bone tissue regeneration. His work involves designing next-generation nanocomposite biomaterials, which have potential ligament repair and regeneration applications.

One of Pooyan’s notable projects focuses on developing biocomposite polymers and scaffolds that enhance the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of materials for tissue engineering. By leveraging advanced manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing, he is creating solutions that could significantly reduce recovery times and improve patient outcomes, particularly athletes. His efforts in tuning microstructures and optimizing materials underscore his commitment to scientific precision and practical impact.

Pooyan’s contributions also extend to cancer diagnostics, where he collaborates with medical researchers to develop a cancer test bed that mimics the human body fluid flow to monitor cancer cells' behavior. By extracting cells from tissue samples, his work aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy and pave the way for more effective treatments. His interdisciplinary approach, combining engineering techniques with biomedical challenges, has led to several high-impact publications and over 100 citations, highlighting his budding influence in the field.

His transition from mechanical to biomedical engineering reflects his desire to contribute directly to healthcare advancements.
