Mark Strand, PhD, MS, CPH, has been named to the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Public Health.
Strand, professor in the Department of Public Health and the School of Pharmacy at NDSU, begins his editorial board appointment to the prestigious public health journal on October 28 for a three-year term.
According to the AJPH, the “Editorial Board is a policy making body that provides
direction and advice to the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Section Editors, and journal staff.” As a member of the board, Strand will assist in reviewing policy issues, publishing priorities and editorial independence of the publication.
“It is an honor to be part of the Editorial Board,” said Strand. “The importance of an evidence-based approach to public health practice has never been more apparent than now. I am deeply committed to ensuring that quality research is published, and that it forms the basis for public health practice and policy formation.”
According to Dr. Pamela Jo Johnson, chair of the Public Health Department in the College of Health Professions at NDSU, “Dr. Strand consistently demonstrates his commitment to the science and practice of public health in class, in practice, and in his research. This appointment attests to the significant and sustained contributions that he makes to the field of public health both locally and nationally.”
The American Journal of Public Health held a 5.381 impact factor in 2018 and is considered one of the premier journals in public health research, policy, and practice. Impact factor measures how frequently articles published during a specific timeframe were cited during the following year. In the Science Citation Index, AJPH was number 12 in 2018 and ranked number 6 in the Social Science Index.
As an Editorial Board member, Strand will help provide oversight for the Journal, define its long-range vision, strategic plan, annual priorities, policies and procedures, while ensuring the quality and integrity of the Journal.
“The Editorial Board members are chosen by the Executive Board to include members with a broad knowledge of public health, and to secure a balanced representation of the various disciplines involved in public health,” said Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD and José Ramón Fernández-Peña, MD, MPH and president-elect of the American Public Health Association in a letter announcing Strand’s appointment.
Strand’s previous honors include the Mid-Career Achievement Award in International Health from the International Health Section of the American Public Health Association, 2020 NDSU Mentoring Excellence Award, 2016 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research from the NDSU College of Health Professions, induction into NDSU’s Tapestry of Diverse Talents; and the 2014 Outstanding Rural Education/Mentor Award from the North Dakota Public Health Association.
