Assistive Listening Device

Assistive listening devices (ALDs) are accommodations provided in NDSU classrooms to support students with hearing impairments. These devices enhance sound clarity and help individuals overcome barriers in auditory communication. ALDs include technologies such as personal FM systems, infrared systems, and loop systems. Personal FM systems consist of a microphone worn by the instructor and a receiver worn by the student, transmitting sound directly to their hearing aids or cochlear implants. Infrared systems use light signals to transmit audio signals to receivers worn by students. Loop systems, on the other hand, rely on electromagnetic fields created by a loop of wire installed in the classroom, which can be picked up by hearing aids or cochlear implants equipped with a telecoil. By utilizing these ALDs, NDSU students with hearing impairments can fully engage in lectures, discussions, and other classroom activities, ensuring an inclusive and accessible educational experience.
