Real Time Transcribing/CART Captioning

Real-time transcribing, also known as CART (Communication Access Real-Time Translation) captioning, is a service that provides instant and accurate transcription of spoken words into written text. It is particularly beneficial for students in classrooms who may have hearing impairments, auditory processing disorders, or other communication challenges. CART captioning involves a trained professional, known as a CART captionist or stenographer, who uses specialized equipment to transcribe lectures, discussions, and other spoken content in real time. The captions are displayed on a screen, allowing students to read along and access the information simultaneously with their peers.

The benefits of real-time transcribing in the NDSU classroom are numerous. Firstly, it provides equal access to information for students with hearing or auditory challenges, enabling them to fully participate in class discussions and lectures. This inclusivity promotes a more inclusive and diverse learning environment. Additionally, real-time transcribing offers students the opportunity to review and study the lecture material at their own pace. They can refer back to the written captions to reinforce their understanding, clarify any missed information, or create comprehensive study notes. This feature is particularly valuable for complex or technical subjects where accuracy and comprehension are crucial.

Let's consider a few examples to illustrate the benefits of real-time transcribing in university classrooms. Suppose a student with a hearing impairment is enrolled in a biology lecture. With CART captioning, they can follow along with the lecture in real time, ensuring that they don't miss any critical information conveyed verbally. They can also review the captions later to reinforce their understanding of the material. Another example is a student with an auditory processing disorder in a fast-paced economics class. The real-time captions provide them with a visual aid to complement their auditory processing, helping them grasp complex economic concepts more effectively. The ability to access and review the captions allows them to study and prepare for exams with greater confidence and accuracy.
